Key Features
- Eight granular emitters – colour‑coded circles along the top row of the interface let you deploy up to eight independent emitters. Each emitter shoots grains in the direction of its “stalk,” and can be aimed manually or via X/Y/Angle controls . Emitters can trigger continuously via a step sequencer (up to 64 steps), respond to MIDI notes in a specific range or follow a sequenced pattern only while a note is held .
- Binaural spatialisation – particles fly through a flow‑field that defines the stereo (and front‑back) position of each grain. Up/down correspond to front/back in the sound field, giving true binaural placement .
- Customisable flow field – DUST’s physics engine isn’t fixed. You can choose from built‑in equations (e.g., spirals, inward flow) or write your own to alter how particles move . Effectors – virtual magnets placed in the field – can attract or repel particles with adjustable strength and fall‑off .
- Convolution reverb – a built‑in convolver lets you load any impulse response (cave, pipe, leaves, etc.) for unique reverbs
- Extensive modulation – right‑click any dial to assign LFOs, step sequencers, MIDI control or particle‑property‑based modulation (e.g., modulate filter cutoff by particle distance from centre) .
- Rich sound library and presets – DUST includes over 60 sounds and factory presets by renowned sound designers Richard Devine, Ivo Ivanov and others . You can also drag‑and‑drop your own samples into any emitter .
- Binaural panning & convolution FX version – use DUST as a synthesiser or as an effect plug‑in to granularise and spatialise incoming audio; available in VST, VST3, AAX and AU formats .
- Cross‑platform support – works on Mac and PC (32‑bit and 64‑bit)..
Why DUST?
Most granular instruments slice audio into clouds that sit statically in the stereo field. DUST treats those clouds as living objects. The eight emitters fire grains into a dynamic flow, and effectors push or pull them in real time. According to Audio Plugin Guy, this makes DUST “fantastic… for sound design involving any sort of directional character,” enabling whooshes that move across the field or drones that orbit the listener . Evolving atmospheres, pads and transitions come naturally: DUST can handle ear‑candy, glitches, moving soundscapes or rhythmic granulated hits locked to your DAW’s tempo . MusicRadar praised its “remarkably flexible sound design” and “inventive way to create living textures” . Andrulian’s review noted that DUST “transcends the possibilities typically offered by VSTs,” offering both quick results and deep sonic control
